Trusting God: Doubt. Facebook post 5-15-14. I think it’s safe to say that most of us have times when we doubt God. I want to take a few minutes on our blog today to speak to those of you who may be doubting or know someone who is doubting, for whatever reason. Let’s look at who I consider to be the greatest doubter of all time and what God’s awesome response was to him!
There is hope for those of us who doubt God. There is one man who had every reason NOT to doubt God and yet, when he was in his darkest hour, the doubt crept in. God’s response to him was remarkable! Imagine if God spoke to you loud and clear and said to you that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. What if God spoke to you and told you that you will see Jesus in person? What if God told you, when you see Jesus, in person, the Spirit of God will come down from Heaven and land on Him and you will see this with your very own eyes? What if this came true? It did come true for one man! Hang in there with me for a minute and let’s look at this together. Pretend you are that man.
While John the Baptist was baptizing one day, he saw Jesus in person and baptized Him. Not only did John see the Spirit of God descend on Him like a dove but he also heard, out loud with his own ears, God the Father’s voice say that Jesus was the Son of God. (Matthew 3:13-17, John 1:32) What a moment! Put yourself in that spot. You have the Son of God in your arms, the Spirit of God in your eyes and the voice of the Father in your ears!
If there is one person in human history that should never have doubted, it was John. Sometime after that, John was thrown into prison. While he was awaiting his execution, John sent a message to Jesus. Are you ready for this?? John, along with the entire Jewish nation, was waiting for God’s Messiah to come. God clearly showed John that Jesus was the Messiah. This was John’s message to Jesus from prison: “Are you the one who was to come, or should we expect someone else?” (Matthew 11:2) Are you kidding me? That was his message? Are you the one?!?
It’s extremely important for us to pay close attention to Jesus’ response to John. I believe it is the same response Jesus is giving to us doubters today. Jesus does not rebuke John; rather His response is full of love and compassion. “Go back and report to John what you hear and see: the blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the good news is preached to the poor. Blessed is the man who does not fall away on account of me.”
I believe with all my heart that Jesus was telling John that He is the Son of God and He is here to heal and to save humanity from death. Jesus didn’t want John to be ensnared by discouragement and doubt. He wanted him to rise above and believe that He is the Messiah and his savior.
The message to you is the same. Jesus is here, He is with you and He is still healing and rescuing from death. He wants you to move beyond your doubt and believe He is your Almighty God who can rescue you. He loves you. Take a minute right now and put your doubt into his hands today and trust Him.
p.s. I have two deeply loved friends who died last year. They were both very sick. If they were here, they would be the first to tell you that Jesus is still in the business of healing and rescuing from death. They know first hand.
