Light The Fire
I truly often think I have the greatest job in the world. Lately, I have said to many of my friends, that I have never been so excited to be in youth ministry as I am now. Over the last several months I have had the incredible privilege, once again, to watch God LIGHT THE FIRE in the hearts of teenagers. I wish you could be there with me to see their tears, their open hearts and their surrender to God. Truly amazing. God has put a love in my heart for these kids.
But, over the last several years, something has happened that has caught me a little by surprise; God is placing a growing love in my heart for these kid’s parents as well. I have a deep desire to see these kids living under the umbrella of nurturing parents and healthy marriages.
And so, Carol and I have felt very humbled over the last four years to be on the Campus Crusade/Family Life speaker team and to see first hand, God at work in
the lives of these families at the marriage conferences. There is a story that came out of one of the conferences this spring that I have been very excited to tell you about. In between sessions at the conference there are projects for the couples to work on.
A couple was beginning one of the projects in their hotel room when the husband said, “I can’t do this.” When his wife asked why not, he said, “How can I do this project when I’m not even a Christian?” His wife’s heart began to beat faster, she had prayed for him to come to know Christ for years. He then said, “I need to give my life to Jesus right now but I don’t know how.” Overwhelmed with emotion, his wife helped lead him to Jesus right there in their hotel room. After praying, he said to his wife, “I don’t know what kind of man God wants me to be.” He prayed again and asked God to show him what kind of a man God wanted him to be.
At the beginning of the next session, the other speaker (my friend Bob Maddox), to illustrate that God’s grace is a free gift, held a book up in his hand and said, “Who wants a free book?” Of course, hands went up everywhere. Bob, not knowing what had gone on before the session, walked out into the crowd and out of six hundred people, you know what happened, he handed the book to the husband who had just surrendered his life to Christ. The man said thank you and looked down at the book. The title was Tender Warrior (God’s Intention For A Man), a book talking about what kind of men God wants us to be. The man cried through the whole session, knowing that God had given him the answer to his prayer. Bob told me later that in all his years of speaking and doing marriage conferences, he had never given that book away like that. Pretty cool. Five couples gave their lives to Christ together during one of the sessions.
Watching God LIGHT THE FIRE in couples, individuals, families and teenagers is such an amazing thing. Thank you for being a part of this team.
God bless you,
